A Sumter man was arrested after hitting a pedestrian at the A&P Coastal Mart on Boulevard Road and failing to stop for a blue light during a chase Monday.
A Sumter Police Department report states the incident began about 5 p.m. when an officer observed a red Dodge Ram truck bearing an improper paper tag traveling at a high rate of speed on Flamingo Road.
The officer activated the blue lights, but the vehicle accelerated, made a left turn onto Plowden Mill Road and went into the parking lot of the A&P Coastal Mart, where the vehicle struck a pedestrian.
The vehicle continued to circle in the parking lot and then crossed over Boulevard Road onto Hannah Street, made a left onto Hannah Court and a right onto Maple Street.
The driver then jumped out of the vehicle through the front passenger door and fled on foot into the woods.
After a foot chase, Lucious Magazine, 34, of Albert Drive, was detained.
Officers later learned that Magazine’s driver’s license was suspended with a second offense for failure to pay traffic tickets.
During the chase, other officers checked on the pedestrian, who did not want to be taken to the hospital and would not file a report.
While doing a tow inventory of Magazine’s vehicle, officers found 44 grams of suspected marijuana. The report stated that Magazine wouldn’t speak to officers.
Magazine was charged with failure to stop for blue lights, second-offense driving suspension and possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
This is the second incident to occur at A&P Coastal Mart this past week.
On Friday, 48-year-old Michael Wilson, of Tullah Drive, was shot at the gas station, and he later died at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. A 29-year-old has been charged in his death.
